Friends of the Prince Township Library News

The Friends are pleased to report that this year’s Mammoth Book, which took place from April 3rd to the 5th in the Station Mall, was a solid success, earning a total of $1,125.50.

The proceeds will go toward the purchase of supplies and equipment for the Prince Township Public Library as well as to the expenses related to hiring a student librarian this summer under the Canada Summer Jobs program. (See information below.)

It takes many willing hands to organize such a large-scale event: those who donate materials, sort them, transport them to and from the mall, and supervise sales tables.

Special thanks go to Coun. Ron and Silvana Amadio,  Fran Burns, Ron and Margaret Christenson, Bev Couch, Ruth Ann Daigle, Jane Darlow, Art and Rita Fink, Les and Sandy Fulcher, Margaret Jackson, Lucy Konkin and John Richenhaller, Brian Kucherepa, Andy and Marguerite LaHaye, Mike and Cheryl Landmark, Judy McGonigal, Donna Tucker, Rita Wagner, Betty Wilton and Gerry Yeo.

A big round of applause also goes to the grade eight class at R. M. Moore Public School, who took on the task of getting dozens of boxes out of storage areas and into waiting vehicles: Ali Carter, Madisson Coe, Abigail Fogg, Vennetta  Haus, Kristen Jobst, Kristina Koprash, Cierra Luxton, Tyler Marshall, Geordan McLean, and Haodong Zhou.

Thanks as well to Coun. Bobbi Williamson for her generous support of our Mammoth Book Sale.

LIBRARY SEEKS SUMMER STUDENT EMPLOYEE:

The Friends of the Prince Township Library has applied to Canada Summer Jobs for a grant to hire a student library assistant during the summer.  If the application is approved, the library will be able to offer up to eight weeks of employment to a college or university student.

To be eligible, a student must have attended school full time during the past academic year and must plan to continue his/her education in the fall.  The successful applicant will be mature, trustworthy, and familiar with routine computer tasks.

Duties include cataloguing books, assisting library patrons, and working with elementary school children in the TD Summer Reading Program.  Resumes may be delivered to the Prince Township Public Library in the township’s Community Centre.  For further information call Marguerite LaHaye at 779-3653 (library) or 779-3907 (home) or e-mail the library at ptpl.@twp.prince.on.ca.

Library News

Thank You, Ann Mitchell:  The Prince Township Public Library Board wishes to express its thanks to Ann Mitchell, who is leaving us after May 1.  Over the past two years, we have counted on Ann’s help in getting  our financial records in order for the annual audit, applying for operating grants from the Ontario Ministry of Culture, and obtaining replacement software for our ailing computers.

Ann, the library volunteers are going to miss their weekly chats with you about which books and movies you thought would be winners among our patrons.  We’re also grateful for the numerous items you donated to our collection during your time in Prince.

Finally, we’d like to extend our best wishes to you as head off to your new position in Southern Ontario.

Student Summer Employment: The Friends of the Prince Township Library has applied to Canada Summer Jobs for funding to hire a student librarian.  If the application is approved, the library will be able to offer eight weeks of employment, beginning in July, to a college or university student who will be returning to school next fall.

For further information, turn to the Friends’ news in this issue of the Prince Township Newsletter.

Photocopier:  Thanks to a capital grant from the Ontario Ministry of Culture, the library has acquired a multifunction colour laser copier, which our volunteers are gradually learning to use.   In future, we will be able to offer photocopying services to patrons.  The library board has not yet set its fees for printing but will do so after studying those of other Northern Ontario Libraries.

The board wishes to thank Chairman Brian Kucherepa for checking out Canadian prices for the copier, ordering it, and setting it up in the library.

Prince Township Book Club:  Our next meeting is Thursday, May 1 in the library at 7:00 p.m., when guest author Sarah Burns, who spent her childhood in Gros Cap, will  discuss her debut novel, Jackfish, the Vanishing Village.  If you’ve read and loved Jackfish  (or have it on your must-read list) come on out and join us.

TD Summer Reading Program:  The library will continue to offer the TD Summer Reading Program over July and August for elementary school students age 6 to 12.  This year’s them is Laugh Out Loud – LOL for short – and will include humorous fiction, poetry, riddles and jokes.

New Library Titles:  Our nonfiction first pick is Kasztner’s Train by Anna Porter, a biography of Hungarian lawyer Reszo Kasztner, who rescued hundreds of Jews from the Nazi death camp during World War II.

We also recommend Marya Hornbacher’s Madness, which takes an intimate look into the mind of a woman struggling with bipolar disorder.

In the fictional category, our CanLit choice is Late Nights on Air, which won the 2007 Giller Prize for its author, Elizabeth Hay.

If you enjoy crime fiction, and white-knuckle thrillers we now have large print editions of The Whole Truth by David Baldacci and Quicksand by Iris Johansen.

If you also like a dollop of humour mixed with your mischief and mayhem, try Janet Evanovich’s Plum Lucky, featuring the zany bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Children’s Books:  We have added several new titles to our collection of stories and poems form preschoolers.  Visit the children’s corner to check them out.

 Library Hours:

Mon.: 1:00 to 3:00

Tues.: 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:30 to 8:00

Wed.:  10:00 to noon and 1:00 to 3:00

Thurs: 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:30 to 8:00

Fri.: 10:00 to noon.

Closed Weekends

Using the Outdoor Drop Box:  Plastic bags may soon be a rarity, but we ask patrons to continue using them use them when depositing borrowed items in the after hours drop box outside the Community Centre.   Volunteers do check the box once during every shift, but  valuable books can still get drenched by an overnight downpour.

Use Your Head, Wear A Helmet!

Why Wear a Bicycle Helmet?

Wearing a bicycle helmet has been shown to reduce serious head injuries by 85%. 39% of deaths from cycling injuries occur in children under the age of 15. Even a low speed fall on a bicycle path can cause a serious head injury! As of October 15, 1995 anyone under the age of 18 must wear a certified helmet when cycling. It's the law!

How to buy the Right Helmet

There are different types of helmets for different sports and activities. This is because different sports cause different types of injuries. It is therefore important when choosing a bicycle helmet to make sure that it is specifically designed for cycling (not hockey, skiing, football, etc.) otherwise, you may not get the type of protection you need.

Check and make sure that the helmet has a certification label from one of the following organizations: Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Snell, The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), and The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). A certification label indicates that the helmet has been tested to withstand certain levels of impact giving you the best protection that is available.

-Helmets should have adequate vents to allow for airflow to the head.

-Avoid helmets with extremely pointed shapes, inadequate or excessive vents, dark colours, thin straps, and complicated adjustments.

-Make Sure Your Helmet Fits!

-When you place your helmet on your head, it should sit low. The brim of the helmet should be about two fingers width (1-2 cm) above the eyebrows.

-The helmet should not be tilted forwards or backwards.

-The chinstraps should go over both ears in the shape of a V. The ear should be in the middle of the V. The chinstrap should be secure around the chin, with room for one finger to fit between the strap and the chin.

If Your Helmet is Too Small…

-Loosen chin straps

-Remove any extra foam from inside

-If the helmet is still too small, you will need to purchase a larger one!

If Your Helmet is Too Big…

-Tighten chin straps

-Add extra foam to the inside of the helmet, according to the manufacturers instructions. -If the helmet is still too big, you will need to purchase a smaller one!

-When sizing a helmet, never alter the outer shell! This could damage the helmet and make it less effective in protecting you from a head injury!

Replacing Your Helmet

-Always replace your helmet after a crash. Damage may not be seen by looking at the helmet, but the inner lining may have

been destroyed.

-Cracks or dents mean that you need a new helmet.

-When a helmet is five years old, it needs to be replaced because the material naturally weakens over time.

Caring For Your Helmet

-Wash in warm water with a mild soap.

-Only use paint and stickers that come with the helmet when it is purchased (other paint and glue might damage the helmet).

-Keep your helmet away from heat. Even stored in a car trunk, a helmet may become unglued and will therefore not give you effective protection against injury.

-Check the screws and straps to make sure that they are tight and working properly.

Ministry of Transportation of Ontario

Do I have to wear a bicycle helmet while riding on the road?

Yes, if you are under the age of 18 you are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when travelling on any public road. Cyclists over 18 are encouraged to wear helmets for their own safety, but are not required to by law.

Why was the bicycle helmet law introduced?

Research shows that helmets can be extremely effective in preventing head injuries. About three-quarters of all cycling fatalities involve head injuries. The Ontario government is committed to promoting cycling safety.

What is the fine for not wearing a helmet?

The fine is $60. With court costs of $5 and the victim fine surcharge of $10, the total is $75 for a plea of guilty.

Prince Survey Results

This is an analysis of Question 15 of the survey which asked “Could you please indicate your satisfaction level with the following programs and services.” The following are bar graphs which illustrate the responses of each question.  The question number and title of the graphs represent the question the graph is depicting.  The x-axis along the bottom represent the level of satisfaction with 0 = no response, 1 = extremely dissatisfied, 5 = neutral and 10 = extremely satisfied.  The y-axis along the left side is the total number of responses.  The number above each bar is the number of response for each satisfaction level. If you have any questions about the results of this survey, please contact Margaret Lacourciere at 779-2992, or Margaret@twp.prince.on.ca
